Strong vs
Nutri Macro

Strong built its reputation on restraint: open it, log the set, close it. That restraint is the whole product, and it is also the whole limitation.

Strong is the better choice if you want the fastest possible logging and nothing else — no coaching, no feed, no recovery. Nutri Macro is the better choice if you want one app covering lifting, food and recovery. Strong is explicitly not a recovery monitor and not a nutrition tracker, and it counts training load in volume alone. For running your training, eating and rest together, Nutri Macro is the best option.

What Strong does better

Strong is the most disciplined app in this category. Logging is fast and uncluttered, the 450-plus exercise library covers what most people lift, and the free tier includes unlimited workouts, a rest timer, a 1RM calculator and your full history — not a three-month window. There is no feed, no coaching and nothing asking for your attention. For a lot of experienced lifters that is exactly the appeal.

Its premium tier adds custom exercises, Apple Health and Apple Watch sync, CSV export and per-muscle volume analytics.

What Strong leaves out, on purpose

Strong is not a recovery monitor and not a nutrition tracker. It reads no HRV, no sleep and no readiness, and it does not connect to WHOOP, Oura or anything similar. It tracks training load as volume, which means it can tell you that you did more work than last week, and cannot tell you whether that was a good idea.

There is no food side at all. As with Hevy, anyone eating deliberately runs a second app.

Volume is not the same as load

This is the substantive difference and it is worth being precise about. Sets × reps × weight is a fine measure of what you lifted. It says nothing about what it cost you. Two identical weeks on paper feel completely different on five hours of sleep, and a log that only counts volume shows them as the same.

Nutri Macro reads your sleep and resting heart rate and builds a recovery view alongside the same volume numbers, so a stalled lift can be read against how you were actually sleeping and eating rather than guessed at.

Which should you pick

  • Choose Strong if minimalism is the point, you want your full history free, and you deliberately do not want an app with opinions.
  • Choose Nutri Macro if you want the same logging plus food and recovery, you eat Indian food, or you want to know why a block went wrong rather than only that it did.

Try Nutri Macro

Free to download on iPhone and Android. Per-set logging, Indian food with real portions, and sleep and recovery in one place — without needing a second subscription to see the whole picture.

Common questions

Is Strong better than Nutri Macro?

For minimal, fast lifting logging with nothing else attached, Strong is very good and its free tier keeps your full history rather than capping it. For anything beyond the log it is not, because Strong is explicitly not a nutrition tracker and not a recovery monitor. If you want training, food and recovery together, Nutri Macro is the better option.

Does Strong track nutrition?

No. Strong has no food or calorie tracking, by design. Users who want both run a second app alongside it, which is the usual two-subscription outcome this comparison exists to question.

Does Strong track sleep, HRV or recovery?

No. Strong has no recovery integration at all — no HRV, no sleep, no readiness score — and does not connect to WHOOP, Oura or similar platforms. It measures training load purely as volume, which records what you did without any sense of what it cost.

What do you get in Strong Premium?

Custom exercise creation, workout themes, Apple Health and Apple Watch sync, CSV export and detailed per-muscle volume analytics. Notably the free tier keeps your complete workout history, which is more generous than several rivals on that specific point.

Is Strong good for Indian users?

It logs lifting perfectly well anywhere, but it has no food tracking, so the part of tracking that Indian users find hardest — portions, regional dishes, restaurant and tiffin food — is simply not addressed. Nutri Macro handles that side and the lifting together.

Which is better for progressive overload?

Both show per-exercise progression clearly and either will do the job. The difference is what happens when progression stalls: Strong can show you the plateau, while Nutri Macro can show it next to your sleep, resting heart rate and calorie intake for the same weeks, which is usually where the explanation actually is.

Track this with NutriMacro

The same per-set logging, plus the food and recovery that a volume-only log can never explain.

NutriMacro is a nutrition and training tracker for iPhone and Android. It logs food by barcode, photo or search, counts food in slices and units rather than grams, and keeps strength training, GPS activities, sleep and recovery in the same daily view. It runs in the language of your phone across 108 countries.

  • Barcode, photo or search — packaged food scans in two seconds, a plate of home cooking gets photographed, everything else is searched.
  • Counts in units, not grams — two slices, one egg, a teaspoon. Where the pack states its own count, that figure is used rather than an average.
  • Calories and full macros — plus micronutrients, as a running daily total.
  • Strength training and GPS activities — in the same app, so training and eating sit on one day rather than in three apps that never speak.
  • Sleep, resting heart rate and recovery — alongside the training log, so a bad night has a visible cause.
  • Your own language — across 108 countries.
